First it was the Stanley Cup playoffs featuring the Washington Capitals perennial quest for surviving their usual foes that managed to beat them for a long time. Not this year, as the Caps emerged victorious and in temporary possession of the Stanley Cup. Then came the NBA playoffs which I can not comment on because I never watch pro basketball, so I do not know who won.
All that was exciting, but ten came the World Cup of soccer. I watched in amazement as Latin American and African teams went out one after another. Except that one side of the Cup (the French side from Belgium and France) contains enough players of African origin to almost make up another team. The other side contains England and Croatia, the latter fresh from dispatching the Russians in yet another shootout of penalty kicks. The Croatians won on the strength of a Russian kick that was not even on goal and a Croatian kick that hit two goal posts before it went in. And so the excitement builds.
The favorites? Germany, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico are long gone dreaming of the World Cup in another four years.
Meanwhile the Tour de France has started and will go into the 'high gear' in a week or so.
A busy Summer.
