Enviros dream of doing away with fossil fuels and generate energy via solar and wind. The battery proposed by MIT would store electric energy and even out the uneven rate of energy production:

But the problem with renewables is not just storage but production. Wind turbines are murder on birds and solar stuff is expensive and covers the land. Only thorium fueled reactors are safe and efficient enough to produce almost unlimited amounts of energy. Thorium fueled atomic plants USE UP fissionable materials so they will GET RID OF radioactive waste not produce it.
