The Trump presidency made a deep descent in December. The departures of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, the appointment of senior persons of lesser experience, the abandonment of allies who fight beside us, and the president's thoughtless claim that America has long been a "sucker" in world affairs all defined his presidency down."
Pres Trump has ended our involvement is Syria as far as keeping troops there. Gen Mattis disagreed and so he handed in his resignation. The rebels fighting the Assad regime were allied with Al Qaeda and ISIS. The idea that we are abandoning allies who fight beside us is preposterous. The US did not turn its back on allies, but is no longer supporting our enemies. Iran is pulling back from Syria as that regime is under pressure and its survival is in question. Yes, the US had been a sucker in world affairs. We give money to countries who then turn around and do not support us.
As for General Kelly, his mode of dealing with the White house and people who work there turned out to be unsatisfactory. It is a very difficult job.
